Ålesund  was founded in 1837 and is located in western Norway, north of the mouth of Stor Fjord.

The municipality is set on several islands—including Nørvøya, Aspøya, Heissa (Hessa), and Oksnøya—which are connected by bridges. Ålesund (or Aalesund) is a city and municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway.
