BELGIUM ~ Atomium - Brussels ~

... The Atomium is one of the most loved iconic structure’s of Brussels and most popular tourist attraction... with 600,000 visitors a year... the imposing spheres can be seen from afar... today it serves as a museum, an art centre and a cultural place... but the main attraction inside is the stunning 360°panoramic views from the top level and includes a restaurant... it was built as part of Expo 58... they represent the faith one had in the power of science and moreover in nuclear power... nuclear power could be used for the benefit of all and not only for destruction... originally it was planned that it would be broken down after six months, but because it was such a popular monument the Belgian government decided to leave it standing for a little while longer... meanwhile, the monument has been there for over 60 years extra...with Thierry De Cordier Black stamp that refers to the NADA paintings... with special first day postmark👍... Thanks a lot Johan! (✿◠‿◠)

Designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and the architects André and Jean Polak, it stands 102m (335 ft) tall. Its nine 18m diameter (59 ft) stainless steel clad spheres are connected in the shape of a unit cell that could represent an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times.

Tubes connecting the spheres enclose stairs, escalators and an elevator (in the central, vertical tube) to allow access to the six visitable spheres.

It is located on the Heysel Plateau in Laeken (northern part of the City of Brussels), where the exhibition took place.

The building was completely renovated between 2004 and 2006.
