... Great postcard of a lesser known South American country... Colonia del Sacramento reflect in its layout and architecture its origins as the most southerly Portuguese colonial settlement... a fusion of Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial styles... the buildings date from the 17th, 18th and 19thC... a pleasant historic town with narrow cobblestoned alleyways, post-colonial ruins, centennial trees, and scenic plazas overlooking the River Plate... the Barrio Historico (Historic Old Town) is undoubtedly the main attraction... the rustic lighthouse facing Buenos Aires is the first thing you see in Colonia and is used as a viewpoint... a couple of houses are turned into little museums... with nice matching stampđ...Thanks a lot Jorge!【ă】
Colonia del Sacramento is situated on a peninsula on the southwestern edge of Uruguay.
It was first settled by the Portuguese in 1680. Portuguese sovereignty was much disputed by the Spanish during the first decennia. They besieged the town and control changed hands several times. The Spanish empire finally took hold of this strategic post on the RĂo de la Plata in 1777.
UNESCO named Colonia del Sacramento a world heritage site in 1995.
