ITALY ~Rome-UNESCO~

This card brings back such nice memories!
Italy... one of the few countries I have visited during a school holiday a looooong time ago... I remember the beautiful and historic city, amazing art and architecture. .... To stand in front of one of the Seven Wonders of the World was incredible.I think the Colosseum is astonishing, and is a sight that everyone should visit at least once!

The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre in the center of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering.Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. As well as the gladiatorial games, other public spectacles were held there, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

ITALY ~Pompeii-UNESCO~

And Pompeii is certainly a place that I would love to visit! :-)

Pompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples in the territory of the comune of Pompeii. Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in 79 AD. The eruption buried Pompeii under 22 meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1,600 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1592. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with approximately 2,500,000 visitors every year.

I have also a lot postcards still travelling...

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region of Italy. Views of:
1. Syracuse

It occupies a "unique position" as one of the holiest sites and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom". Catholic tradition holds that Saint Peter's tomb is below the altar of the basilica. For that reason many Popes starting with the first ones, have been buried here. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age.
